  • WHAT IS CHINESE MEDICINE and HOW DOES IT WORK?
The ancient Chinese began studying the flow of QI -- the vital energy that infuses body, mind, and spirit -- thousands of years ago, and it has gradually been revealed through self-study that Qi circulates in a complex cyclical flow along specific pathways called meridians. These QI meridians communicate with the surface of the body at predictable locations called acupuncture points, and are energetically connected to core physiological processes and organs. Modern science has been able to measure a difference in the electrical charge at these points (being small areas of lowered electrical conductivity), thus corroborating the locations of the meridians mapped by the ancients. If this Qi flow is disrupted -- if it is deficient, excessive, or obtructed -- normal physiological function is affected, resulting in pain or disease. External treatment involves gentle, energetic stimulation of these points by ACUPUNCTURE, MOXIBUSTION, MASSAGE, external application of CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE, or other means. Internal treatment consists of CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE prescription, CHINESE DIETARY THERAPY, and QIGONG (QI -- vital life force) exercises and meditations to be practiced at home. The combination of the above internal and external interventions result in a more harmonious circulation of Qi in the meridians and organs. This sets the stage for the Body-Mind-Spirit to heal itself.

WHAT CONDITIONS RESPOND WELL TO ACUPUNCTURE?
The World Health Organization recognizes Traditional Chinese Medicine and acupuncture's effectiveness in the treatment of many commonly encountered clinical disorders.

    Among these are:
    CHRONIC, PAINFUL, and DEBILITATING DISORDERS
    IMMUNOLOGICAL DISORDERS
    NEUROMUSCULAR DISORDERS
    GASTROINTESTINAL DISORDERS
    PEDIATRIC DISORDERS
    VASCULAR and CIRCULATORY DISORDERS
    GYNECOLOGICAL and OBSTETRIC DISORDERS
    RESPIRATORY DISORDERS
    UROGENITAL DISORDERS
EYE, EAR, NOSE, and THROAT DISORDERS
EMOTIONAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL, STRESS-RELATED, and ADDICTIVE DISORDERS

Prevention of the disharmony and energetic imbalance that precedes disease, and overall enhancement of Qi are also available to the patient of TCM.

    IS ACUPUNCTURE SAFE?
In the hands of an NCCAOM (National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine) board certified and state licensed acupuncturist, your safety is assured. For the highest caliber of practitioner of acupuncture or TCM, always look for credentials of "Dipl.Ac. (NCCAOM)," which assures your practitioner graduated from a 3 to 4 year/ 3000 credit hour accredited acupuncture college, and not a 100 hour certificate program offered to other licensed healthcare practitioners: there IS a difference in both safety and efficacy.

At Piedmont Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine, only disposable, one-time-use needles are used, to ensure that any risk of diease transmission is eliminated.

    ABOUT BOYD BAILEY, M.Ac., L.Ac., Dipl.Ac. (NCCAOM)
Boyd Bailey, M.Ac., L.Ac., Dipl.Ac. (NCCAOM) received his Master of Acupuncture from the Northwest Institute of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NIAOM) in Seattle, WA., where he then began both a successful private practice and an integrated practice with naturopathic physician (ND) and licensed massage therapist (LMT). He was a teaching assistant in both Chinese and Japanese acupuncture classes at NIAOM. He is currently licensed by the state of North Carolina and board certified by the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncturists (NCCAOM).
Additional training includes postgraguate studies in Chinese herbal medicine and various Japanese acupuncture protocols, as well as certification from Tokyo, Japan in Toyohari meridian therapy. Toyohari meridian therapy is a highly refined system of acupuncture (initially developed by blind practitioners) which involves specialized palpative diagnoses and many non-insertive techniques using silver and gold needles. Since no needle insertion is required, this style of acupuncture is excellent for pediatric treatment and needle sensitive patients.
